Emeritus Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology of the Catholic University of Louvain, he is Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology and President of the Belgian National Committee for Physiology and Pharmacology. Holder of several scientific prizes, he is Doctor Honoris Causa of the University Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg, France), the University Henry Poincaré (Nancy, France) and the Comenius University (Bratislava, Slovakia). He was elected Secretary General (1987-1994), then President (1994-1998) of IUPHAR. Past-President of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium, he is member of the Academia Europaea, Associate member of the French National Academy of Medicine and Correspondent member of the French Academy of Pharmacy and is included in the list of Highly Cited Researchers (2001-2015 Clarivate Analytics former Thomson Reuters). He pioneered the pharmacology of calcium channel blockers (calcium antagonists) after his discovery of the first small molecules of this class.
